I saw this on fb at 6 this morning. Hamid cut his foot and stepped in open sewerage, (inside Manus detention centre) got septicaemia, and because of the slow response from the government (and horrific medical services available in offshore detention) he was pronounced brain dead then taken off life support at the request of his family. That’s now two unnecessary deaths under Operation Sovereign Borders. Justice for Reza and Hamid will only be served to them and their families by this policy being destroyed and kicking this vile, racist government out. There’s a special place in hell for Morrison and Abbott.

“It was not his purpose to detain hundreds of children in Australia for an average of 349 days at the cost of their mental health. It was a consequence. It was not his purpose to transfer 200 children to Nauru where workers have documented systemic abuse. It was a consequence.”

“One [prejudice i have to face up to] is the idea that the key features of successive societies and human history have been a result of an ‘unchanging’ human nature. It is a prejudice that pervades academic writing, mainstream journalism and popular culture alike. Human beings, we are told, have always been greedy, competitive and aggressive, and that explains horrors like war, exploitation, slavery and the oppression of women. This ‘caveman’ image is meant to explain the bloodletting on the Western Front in one world war and the Holocaust in the other. I argue very differently. ‘Human nature’ as we know it today is a product of our history, not its cause. Our history has involved the moulding of different human natures, each displacing the one that went before through great economic, political and ideological battles.”
